Discovered in 1867 near Hopetown, the Eureka Diamond was the first diamond discovered in South Africa. The Eureka Diamond heralded the start of the Kimberley Diamond Rush and the beginning of the South African Mineral Revolution. The diamond was placed on display at the 1867 Paris Exhibition and was even inspected by Queen Victoria herself. It was then purchased by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Philip Wodehouse, for £500.

The Eureka Diamond was taken to Britain by Wodehouse where it remained for around 100 years before it was finally purchased by De Beers in 1967 and donated to the Kimberley Mine Museum, where it is resides to this day. First weighing in at an incredible 21,25 carats when it was discovered, the Eureka Diamond has been cut to an oval- shaped brilliant of 10,73 carats.

To mark this important moment in South Africa’s history, the SA Mint has minted a truly special product, the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Eureka diamond, Mint Mark Proof Krugerrand 2016.
