Krugerrand

The original Krugerrand, which was first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint to be used as a key driver for the demand of South African gold in the late 1960’s. Since the discovery of gold in South Africa in 1886 this rare and valuable commodity has also become the symbol of South Africa’s proud numismatic heritage. In 1980, the fractional Krugerrands (½ oz. ¼ oz. and 1/10 oz.) along with the 1 oz Krugerrand opened the market for gold further allowing everyone the chance to own gold. An icon that has stood the test of time, the Krugerrand is the most widely and actively traded gold bullion coin, with over 60 million Krugerrands minted to date. The iconic Krugerrand, regarded by many as the coin that started modern gold coin collecting, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017.
