2020 Australian Kookaburra 5oz Silver Proof

First issued in 1990, the Australian Kookaburra is a much-loved annual coin series portraying Australia’s most famous bush bird, the Kookaburra, otherwise known as the “laughing bird”.

Naturally native to eastern Australia, this gray-brown, woodland-dwelling bird is often heard ‘laughing’ very early in the morning and just after sunset.

30 years later, to mark this coins anniversary, a new release features a special obverse that showcases a representation of Stuart Devlin’s original Kookaburra design. The Kookaburra is also known as the ‘king of the bush’, and has been featured on The Perth Mint’s silver coins for the past 30 years.

The Kookaburra coin series has delighted collectors around the world with its range of creative annual designs highlighting the Australian icon. Over the past three deceased, the Kookaburra coin series has developed into a highly sought-after collection, renowned for outstanding quality and original artistry.

The design by Jennifer McKenna portrays a beautifully intricate drawing of a kookaburra perched on a corrugated rooftop at dawn with streaking rays of sunlight in the background, which have been gilded uniquely in pink gold. Also included is the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 30TH ANNIVERSARY’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the weight and purity of the coin.

While the obverse of the coin features a representation of Stuart Devlin’s depiction of a kookaburra perched on a tree branch, as it appeared on the 1990 Australian Kookaburra Silver Proof Coin. The anniversary dates ‘1990-2020’ and the monetary denomination are included together with a miniature representation of Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
