Treasures of Paris - Champs Elysees Coin

Since 2019, Monnaie de Paris has been celebrating the “City of Light” through its Treasures of Paris series. Highlighted this year is The Champs-Elysées and the flame of the unknown soldier, under the Arc de Triomphe.

The Champs- Elysées Avenue stretches over nearly 2km and links the Concorde Place to the Arc of Triumph. It is in the heart of Paris and is one of the major tourist attractions of the city. As one of the must-see places to visit in Paris, it welcomes about 300,000 visitors a day.

In the 17th century, Le Nôtre, Louis XIV’s gardener, laid the first stones in this marshy area. It was then part of the ascent of what is known as “the most beautiful avenue in the world”. It received its name “Champs-Elysées” which is French for "Elysian Fields," meaning a paradise in Greek mythology. The Champs-Elysées Avenue is full of culture and activities, where one can admire the monuments, go shopping or enjoy its events.
