David Bowie 2020 UK 1OZ and 1/4OZ Gold Proof Coin

Celebrating life through his different personae, David Bowie - English singer, songwriter and actor - transformed the music scene during the 1970’s.

Born in Brixton, South London, in 1947 Bowie began life as David Robert Jones. The name David Bowie was created by the time he was 19 years old as he was on his journey to embark on becoming one of the most influential and iconic stars of rock pop music. He has had a famously innovative career in the history of sound and vision, and has infused generations with his electrifying perpetual state of reinvention.

His millions of fans around the world have remained enthralled by his ability to transform his music, his look and the very notion of rock pop to push boundaries and create spaces for people to feel they too can express themselves freely and openly.

Bowie has sold an estimated 140 million records worldwide, securing him a spot as one of the top 10 biggest-selling UK artists of all time.

The Royal Mint releases the David Bowie 2020 UK 1OZ and 1/4OZ Gold Proof Coins as “The third coin in our Music Legends collection celebrates rock’s definitive chameleon with a design inspired by an image of the singer from his time spent living and recording in Berlin. The inclusion of the lightning bolt motif from the Aladdin Sane era captures Bowie’s career journey, and the moment he finally put aside the props to emerge as an artist in his own right.”

Coin designer, Jody Clark has created the reverse of the coin that celebrates rock’s definitive icon with a design inspired by an image of the singer from his time spent living and recording in Berlin. The design includes the famously recognisable Bowie lightning bolt, nodding to the moment he finally put aside the props to emerge as an artist in his own right.

The reverse of the coin shows David Bowie, facing left whilst behind him, the outline of a thunderbolt, above which are stars. In the lower left, beneath the thunderbolt and next to David Bowie’s shoulder, the designer’s initials JC (for Jody Clark). Diagonally below right, the inscription BOWIE can be seen.

The obverse with Her Majesty The Queen is surrounded by the date, face value and the denomination.
