D’Oh! The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history has its own coin.
Across 60 countries in the world, The Simpsons are a much loved cartoon family having spent 33 years entertaining humanity in more than 20 languages globally. With over 700 episodes aired, this is the longest-running primetime scripted show in television history and to celebrate, the Perth Mint have created an artistic commemorative coin.
The Simpsons debuted in 1987 in a 30-second segment on The Tracey Ullman Show. But soon after that, and as a result of adoration across America, they began to grace television screens in a 30-minute slot, resulting in the yellow family becoming an instant worldwide pop-culture phenomenon. The family’s main character, Homer Simpson is husband to larger-than-life, blue-haired Marge Simpson. The pair have three children, Bart Simpson, Lisa Simpson and Maggie Simpson. The show has won 33 Emmy Awards, 34 Annie Awards and it was awarded the 2017 People’s Choice Awards. But perhaps the greatest achievement of all was in 2018, when The Simpsons became the longest-running primetime scripted show in television history.
The show is currently in its 30th season with no vision of the much-loved yellow family ending its run just yet. To celebrate this, the Homer Simpson 2020 1oz Gold Coin was released. The 1oz gold coin is an official licensed product, and is an extremely limited edition with only 5000 coins minted.
The coin design portrays Homer Simpson together with his iconic catchphrase “D’OH!” with a half-eaten sprinkle glazed-donut, which is Homer’s favourite food. The donut is showcased in place of the letter O in “D’OH!” Included in this design is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s signature and a scatter of sprinkles as the background.
On the reverse side of the coin is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as depicted by Ian Rank-Broadley, together with the monetary value, the weight and fineness and the 2020 date.

In 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was chosen to appear on all coinage of the United Kingdom. That year, his design began to appear on collectors coins and has become widespread ever since.
