Description

Victory in Europe (VE) Day, 8 May 1945, is a momentous day of victory. The moment World War II ended, igniting a sense of relief and hope throughout the world.Victory in Europe (VE) Day became a public holiday, where countries around the world celebrated the news in true happiness and relief. 75 years later we celebrate and commemorate all those who gave their lives and made extreme sacrifices to fight for freedom and peace.

The release of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day 2020 UK £2 Gold coin celebrates this momentous day, by remembering the hope for peace and a brighter future with this commemorative £2 coin. The coin captures the relief and joy of the worldwide population in the world’s most favoured precious metal, gold, and is available in a limited edition gold Proof, silver Proof and silver Proof Piedfort editions. This British legal tender gold coin celebrates the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

The design by The Royal Mint graphic designer Dominique Evans encapsulates the large scale event with the design depicting sunrays burning from the centre of the coin, symbolising the hopeful steps to a brighter future, while a crowd of people celebrate. The word “Victory” is showcased in the background with the dates 1945 - 2020 appearing at the top of the coin, and with “Victory in Europe Day” at the bottom.  Evans speaks of the coin design saying that "Millions came together in the streets to celebrate the end of the war in Europe, inspiring me to put people at the very heart of this coin... The rays evoke search lights, a familiar sight in the skies during wartime, except here they represent rays of hope.” He goes on to explain that "VE Day is still a piece of living history.” And he has hopes that “the coin enables people to capture the poignancy of this landmark anniversary, one remembered by those who were there and celebrated by the generations that followed."

While the reverse side of the coin features renowned international artist and English engraver, Jody Clark’s design of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Clark combines digital and traditional drawing skills to create design concepts for his artwork development. Recently Clark has designed the almost recent portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which features on all pound sterling coins across the United Kingdom.

The 75th Anniversary of VE Day 2020 UK £2 coin is struck to Proof quality from 1/2oz of 22-karat red and yellow gold, and is presented in an official Royal Mint case including a Certificate of Authenticity. This coin is a strictly limited edition with only 475 minted.
