The Silver Koala coin depicts Australia’s famous marsupial
The koala is a marsupial native to the eastern and southern parts of Australia. Although not in any way related to bears, the word bear is added to their name as they have a distinct look of a small teddy bear. The name “koala” derives from an indigenous Australian language which means “animal that does not drink”. In fact, koalas will rarely drink water as they receive most of their needed water from their main source of food: eucalyptus leaves.
Each coin portrays a koala on a gum tree branch with a joey clinging to its back. Both coin designs incorporate the inscription ‘KOALA’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight, purity and year-date.
The obverse of each coin bears The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Jody Clark effigy supplemented with the dates of her reign, and the monetary denomination.
Each coin’s reverse includes a security feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter within the coin’s design. It is only detectable under a magnifying glass. Each bullion coin is presented ina protective acrylic capsule.
