Ancient Greek coinage spanned over a millennium, from the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD, evolving from simple Lydian electrum to highly artistic, personalized city-state, and eventually royal portrait currencies. It is divided into the Fall of Bronze Age (1200-1000 BC), Archaic (Mycaenian) (800–554 BC), Classical Antiquity (500–323 BC), and Hellenistic (330–146 BC) periods.

Although the first true coins were minted by the Kingdom of Lydia in Anatolia (modern-day Turkiye) around 600 BCE, including the use of exonomiic-type coinage such as the Chinese Qin Dynasty, 300 to 200 BCE, "Ban Liang", to be worn as a necklace (hence the punched holes) and Cowrie Shells (Zhou Dynasty, China, 1046 - 256 BCE), it was the Greeks who made them universal and popular. By the 5th century BCE, coinage had become a standard feature of Greek urban life.

Timeline of Ancient Greek Coinage

c. 650–600 BC

The first coins were minted in Lydia (Asia Minor, modern-day Turkiye) using electrum, a natural gold-silver alloy.

Early 6th Century BC:

Greek city-states adopted coinage, starting with Aegina (sea turtle design), followed by Athens, Corinth, and others.

c. 550-504 BC:

Feudal/Tribal Chieftans (Interwar Period) & War with the Persian (Archaemenid) Empire under Cyrus the Great.

c. 480–400 BC:

Following the Persian invasion, Greek coinage reached high artistic levels, with Athenian silver "owl" tetradrachms becoming a dominant trade currency during the "The Golden Age of Athens".

c. 334-174 BC:

Alexander the Great’s conquests established a standardized, empire-wide currency featuring his portrait or Greek deities.

c. 174-135 BC:

Coins became more detailed, often depicting gods, goddesses, and heroes in high relief. Cities began to sign their dies, indicating the artist's pride in craftsmanship.

146 - 93 BC:

The Republic of Imperial Rome conquers Pompey from the Greeks, winning sovereignty but culture would always remain Greek.

1st Century BC:

As Rome conquered the Greek world, many Greek cities continued to produce their own coins, known as "Greek provincial" or "Roman provincial" coinage.

End Date:

The production of these local Greek-style coins largely ended during the reign of Roman Emperor Gallienus (253–268 AD).
