Ancient Coin Pendants: A Timeless Trend We're Totally Crushing On

In the whirlwind of fashion trends, one accessory is stealing the spotlight with a blend of history and heart: ancient coin pendants. Adorned with mysterious inscriptions or intricate historical designs, these pieces are showing up on everyone’s necklaces, from Hollywood stars to the girl next door. If you thought this was just another fad, think again—this trend feels deeply rooted and here to stay.

Arriving at a time when we’re all craving authenticity in a digital world, coin pendants offer more than aesthetic appeal. They’re storytelling artefacts, inviting personal interpretation and emotional connection. Far from a fleeting craze, these timeless pieces have been cherished for centuries and show no signs of fading. As Kristin Weixelbaumer, founder of Black Betty Design, puts it, “They’re not going anywhere anytime soon.”

Why Coin Pendants Are Winning Hearts

The allure of coin pendants lies in their fusion of history, symbolism, and personal significance. Designers are transforming coins—ancient relics, family heirlooms, or modern mementoes—into wearable art. We spoke with two experts, Kristin from BlackBetty and Christina Vracar from MIA, who share why their clients are enamoured and how this trend is evolving.

Kristin explains, “Our clients are deeply drawn to pendants inspired by coins and medallions because they feel timeless yet personal. These designs, like our Let Go & Grow necklace symbolising transformation or the Zodiac necklace reflecting identity, are more than ornaments; they carry stories, symbolism, and intention. They resonate as wearable keepsakes that anchor meaning in everyday life.”

On their role in today’s empowerment-driven zeitgeist, she adds, “Absolutely, these pieces act as shields and affirmations, symbols of strength women carry close to their hearts. The Warrior Woman necklace, for instance, is chosen for its bold aesthetic and as a reminder of inner resilience. In a world where empowerment can feel intangible, coin pendants offer something physical and enduring.”

Kristin also notes their appeal in our digital age: “People are searching for grounding artefacts that feel soulful. The Moon & Sun necklace speaks to duality and balance, while the Turquoise Guardian Eye carries protective energy. These designs tap into an ancient language of mysticism, offering an antidote to the fleeting world of screens—a reminder that meaning can be beautifully material.”

Bespoke requests are a cornerstone at BlackBetty. “Clients often bring heirloom coins from family travels, tokens from grandparents, or vintage medallions,” Kristin says. “We’ve reset coins into modern gold bezels or paired them with gemstones to create talismans that honour lineage while feeling contemporary. One standout was an Amethyst-haloed coin piece—absolutely next-level!”

Kristin wears talismans daily: “My choice shifts with my needs—sometimes the Zodiac necklace for alignment, other times the Let Go & Grow for moving with life’s flow. They’re touchstones of resilience, creativity, and the stories we carry.”

A Mainstay, Not a Comeback

Christina, the founder of MIA Jewellery,  works with genuine coins and views coin pendants as a perennial favourite. “I don’t think there’s a resurgence,” she says. “The coin as a talisman in jewellery has always been a trend. It’ll be there in 2026 and beyond. As long as there’s interest in history, culture, and symbolism, coin jewellery will remain a mainstay.”

On working with valuable coins like Krugerrands, Christina is cautious: “We get requests, though not often. We discuss at length what’s appropriate for the coin to preserve its integrity.” For bespoke pieces, she collaborates closely: “Clients send pictures of their coins, and I suggest settings—minimalist or ornate—based on the design. We discuss metals like gold, silver, or brass. Engraving adds sentiment, but I prefer it on the setting or additional charms to avoid defacing the coin.”

A memorable piece holds personal significance: “My grandmother, a coin enthusiast, sparked my love for this craft. She gave me her collection, including old Greek Drachmas. One had a central hole with Athena’s owl, so I set an evil eye stone bead there for my sister. That piece marked the start of my passion for coin jewellery.”

Sourcing presents challenges: “Older coins, especially circulated ones, can be scratched. I prefer uncirculated coins for clear, beautiful details. Finding specific dates or foreign coins can be tricky. I aim to enhance, not alter, the coin’s beauty—its intricate designs often go unnoticed in everyday use.”

Sustainability is a draw: “Upcycling coins from someone’s drawer into wearable art is sustainable and sentimental. These pieces aren’t just striking; they carry stories and deeper value.”

On their symbolic power, Christina notes, “Jewellery has always been worn for protection. Coin jewellery’s appeal lies in its historical value, symbolism, and mythology.”

Expert Tips for Coin Jewellery

When handling high-value coins like Krugerrands, preservation is paramount, as damage, such as drilling, can erode their numismatic value. Rael Demby, CEO of The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop, shares an upbeat yet cautious perspective.

“I love coin and medallion jewellery for its sentimental power—wearing a piece that carries your heritage or personal story is unmatched. Just like collectable coins, which are treasured for their historical value, symbolism, and the stories they tell, coin jewellery channels that same rich legacy. But for valuable coins like Krugerrands, I’m hawkish—I’d rather keep my gold secure in a safe than around my neck. My tips? Always consult a professional appraiser to assess a coin’s value before altering it. Choose your jeweller carefully and insist on bezel settings or non-damaging methods to keep your coin intact and maintain its value. My advice is to steer clear of using rare, high-value coins in jewellery—I don’t recommend risking their integrity and value. The true magic lies in the sentiment—choose coins that resonate with you, and let the design amplify their historical and symbolic story.”

Coin pendants are more than a trend; they’re a bridge between past and present, blending ancient roots with modern flair. As we head into 2026, expect innovative designs that honour their timeless appeal. Ready to wear your story? A coin pendant might just become your new talisman.
