Calling all South African bird lovers! It’s time to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day on October 11 — a global campaign organised by the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), in partnership with Environment for the Americas.
Held biannually on the second Saturday of May and October, this initiative champions international efforts to protect migratory birds and their habitats. The 2025 theme, “Shared Spaces: Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities,” encourages urban designs that integrate green spaces and reduce pollution — creating environments that support both birds and people.
South Africa shines as a haven for these winged wanderers, hosting remarkable species such as the Amur Falcon, which travels over 22,000 km from Siberia to southern Africa, and the Greater Striped Swallow, a beloved local that migrates between breeding grounds here and wintering sites in Central Africa.
Among these global travellers, the American Goldfinch stands out for its charm and colour. Known for its incredible migration from Canada’s forests to Mexico’s plains, this seed-loving bird dazzles with vibrant yellow plumage in spring and summer, turning a soft olive shade for winter. Often seen in cheerful flocks weaving through fields and gardens, its musical, warbling call is unmistakable.
“These birds are so stunning that first-time spotters often exclaim, ‘Wow!’”
says Terry W. Johnson, a wildlife expert based in Georgia, USA.
Now, the Royal Canadian Mint pays tribute to this striking species with the 2024 1 oz. Pure Silver Proof Coin featuring the American Goldfinch. Struck in 99.99% pure silver, this $20 face-value coin captures the bird’s beauty in selective colour, highlighting its bright yellow feathers and sleek black wings.
“With a limited mintage of just 7,500 worldwide, this 38 mm, 31.39 g coin is a rare find — perfect for birdwatchers and collectors alike,”
says Rael Demby, CEO of The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop.
“This coin beautifully honours the goldfinch’s adventurous spirit.”
