Calling all South African bird lovers! It’s time to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day
on October 11, a global campaign organised by the Convention on Migratory
Species (CMS) and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), in
partnership with Environment for the Americas. Held biannually on the second
Saturday of May and October, this initiative champions international efforts to protect
migratory birds and their habitats. The 2025 theme, “Shared Spaces: Creating Bird-
Friendly Cities and Communities,” encourages urban designs that incorporate green
spaces and reduce pollution to support both birds and people. South Africa shines as
a haven for these winged wanderers, hosting species like the Amur Falcon, which
journeys 22,000 km from Siberia to southern Africa, and the Greater Striped
Swallow, a beloved local flitting between breeding grounds here and Central African
wintering sites.
Among these global migrants, the American Goldfinch sparkles with charm. Known
for its epic trek from Canada’s forests to Mexico’s sunny plains, this bird dazzles with
vibrant yellow plumage in spring and summer, moulting to a subtle olive shade for
winter. Often seen in flocks weaving through fields and gardens, the seed-loving
goldfinch fills the air with its cheerful, warbling song. “These birds are so stunning
that first-time spotters often exclaim, ‘Wow!’” says Terry W. Johnson, a wildlife expert
based in Georgia, USA.
