At The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop, we believe in the power of community and the joy of giving back. We were incredibly proud to support 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, a remarkable non-profit dedicated to spreading warmth and happiness across South Africa. Last weekend, we took that mission to the next level with an exciting activation at Walmer Park Shopping Centre in Gqeberha—and it was a day to remember!
We partnered with Walmer Park Shopping Centre to host a special event at the Edgars Court. The activation followed the inspiring "The Hugest Happiness Blanket" reveal by 67 Blankets at Nelson Mandela University (NMU) on World Happiness Day, March 20. To keep the celebration going, we worked with our partners to recreate that massive blanket in a stunning, scaled-down version for display at the mall. Our version featured a meticulously gold-leafed emoji — a perfect symbol of the creativity and generosity that define the 67 Blankets movement, and showcasing our gold heritage.
Adding to the excitement, 67 Blankets founder Carolyn Steyn visited the setup on Friday, March 21, and was thrilled with the display. She expressed her delight at seeing the scaled-down blanket and the beautifully curated display come to life and praised the collaborative effort that made it all possible. Her visit set an inspiring tone for the weekend’s festivities.
This wasn’t just about admiring beautiful blankets (though there was plenty of that!). Walmer Park Shopping Centre visitors dove into a day packed with fun, inspiration, and community spirit.
Here’s what went down:
A Knit-a-Thon:
Attendees grabbed their needles and joined in the fun as we stitched together warmth and goodwill.
Designer Blanket Showcase:
Guests marveled at over 30 handcrafted blankets, each unique masterpiece created by the talented volunteers of 67 Blankets.
Happiness Hampers Competition:
Those who got interactive and joined in our selfie challenge could walk away with hampers featuring exclusive Mr Happy commemorative coins from The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop, Walmer Park vouchers, and branded 67 Blankets merchandise.
Beyond the activities, the event offered a chance to connect with the 67 Blankets community. Attendees met their ambassadors, learned about their heartwarming mission, and discovered how to get involved as volunteers.
“We were thrilled to partner with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and Walmer Park Shopping Centre to bring this meaningful event to life. This collaboration reflected our commitment to supporting initiatives that positively impact our communities.”
said Sara Joubert, our Regional Manager.
If you joined us, we hope you left with a smile. If you missed it, stay tuned for more opportunities to get involved with our community initiatives. Thank you to everyone who made this day memorable, including Carolyn Steyn for her heartfelt support!
