Prince George, son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was born on 22 July 2013. The new prince’s christening took place on 23 October 2013 in the 16th century St. James's Palace in central London. For the first time, a Royal christening has been marked on a British coin to remember this regal occasion. The christening of Prince George was private, with only senior royals, four members of the Middleton family, the seven godparents and their spouses among the 22 guests.
At the Christening, Prince George wore an outfit made of Honiton lace and white satin by Angela Kelly, a replica of the 172 year old gown worn by royal babies since 1841. 31 years ago, Prince George’s father, William was christened on 4 August 1982 in the ornate cream music room at Buckingham Palace.
The seven godparents chosen were Oliver Baker who attended the University of St. Andrews with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Emilia Jardine-Paterson who attended Marlborough College with the Duchess of Cambridge, Earl Hugh Grosvenor who is the son of one of William’s own godparents, the Duchess of Westminster, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton who served as Private Secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Julia Samuel who heads up the Child Bereavement UK charity and was a close friend of the late Princess Diana, Zara Tindall who is the Duke of Cambridge’s cousin and an Olympic equestrian, William van Cutsem who is a childhood friend of the Duke of Cambridge. After the ceremony, the guests went to Clarens House for tea and the top tier of William and Kate’s wedding cake. It is a British tradition for couples to freeze the top of their cake and then serve it at their firstborn child’s christening.
