Post-Apartheid and South Africa had just had their first free and fair elections the year before. Given the nature of our brand new democracy, the SA Mint took ownership from the Gold Reef City (GRC) Mint, and began issuing the first ever Certificates of Authenticity. Albeit the ending of Apartheid, Krugerrands remained relatively undesired in the international market, only 1678 were minted until 1997 as there were none produced in 1996.
