To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Krugerrand, 1765 proofs were made. There were also two special Krugerrand proofs produced in 1997, the 30th Anniversary Mint Mark Krugerrand Proofs were made with a mintage of 330. The “30” privy mark can be found on the top right field of the reverse next to the Springbok. The other special Krugerrand Proof produced in 1997 is was the Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve Mint Mark Proof coins produced, however it came with a notorious legacy. The said Mint Mark, Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, appearing as an “SS” on the coin itself, proved controversial as you could well imagine, as it was too reminiscent of the Nazi “SS” insignia for the large Jewish population living in SA, With a planned mintage of only 300, however, a total of 72 saw the light of day, and therefore remains as not only one of rarest, but the most controversial Krugerrands of all time.
