A Tribute to a Controversial Legacy. A Coin of Global Significance.
This exceptional 2006 Proof Krugerrand, graded PF69 Ultra Cameo, is not just a coin—it’s a chapter in numismatic history. Struck in collaboration with the Berlin Mint, this limited edition release revives a story that dates back to 1892, when President Paul Kruger sought to immortalize his image—and secure re-election—through newly minted coinage.
But history had other plans.
Engraved by German artist Otto Schulz, the original design featured a misrepresentation of the Boer Voortrekker wagon and bore the artist’s initials “O.S.”—a detail seized upon by Kruger’s political opponents, who mockingly dubbed him the “Dumb Ox.” The initials were removed from future designs. Until now.
This rare edition brings those initials back into the spotlight, proudly displaying “O.S.” beneath Kruger’s bust and the Berlin Mintmark—a crowned bear’s head—on the reverse. It’s a tribute to the complex and intertwined legacy of German-South African minting history.
