From the heart of the Eastern Roman Empire comes this exceptional gold solidus struck during the reign of Constans II, the last emperor to visit Rome before its eventual fall. Minted between AD 651–654 in Constantinople’s 6th officina, this coin reflects a powerful era of transition — marked by war with the Caliphate and deepening theological rifts within Christianity.
The obverse features a bold, facing bust of the emperor, crowned and wearing a chlamys, holding the globus cruciger — a symbol of divine rule over the world. On the reverse, a cross potent on three steps evokes the rising prominence of Christian symbolism as a tool of both faith and imperial control.
With original lustre and clear detail, this coin is graded Extremely Fine, bearing light historical graffito on the reverse — a whisper from centuries past.
