Gold was first discovered in South Africa in the Johannesburg area in 1886. Paul Kruger, the president at the time, wanted to create a currency for The South African Republic. He started the first mint in South Africa in Pretoria. However, he could not wait for it to be constructed because he wanted the coins in circulation before the election. So Kruger minted the 1892 coins at the German Mint in Berlin.
The coins were initially struck with a double shaft design on the ox wagon. This design is associated with the "European" style ox wagon whereas the Voortrekker ox wagon only had a single shaft. These type of coins are highly desirable.
