The design pays tribute to “Richard,” a private of the 6th Airborne Division, who parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the Rhine, and took part in the liberation of Southeast Asia. The reverse features the flags of the Allied nations encircling the coin’s face value and the “RF” (République Française) monogram, while stars beneath represent the Liberty Road — the path of liberation from Normandy to freedom.
