Eighty years after the Allied triumph in Europe, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice that restored peace to the continent with the V-E Day 80th Anniversary Gold Coin – French Soldier.
This dignified release honours Léon, a Second-Maître (Petty Officer) of the Kieffer Commandos — one of just 177 French soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. After fighting through the Battle of Normandy, Léon continued his service in the Netherlands, taking part in the Walcheren landing and the capture of Vlissingen (Operation Infatuate), before witnessing the end of the war in May 1945.
The coin’s reverse unites the flags of all Allied nations that took part in the Normandy landings — France Libre, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Australia, the USA, Norway, the UK, Czechoslovakia, Canada, and Belgium — encircling the face value and the “RF” initials. Beneath, a row of stars honours the Liberty Road, the route marking the advance of Allied forces through France to Luxembourg.
Struck in 99.99% pure gold to proof quality, this 2025 issue is part of Monnaie de Paris’ wartime narrative that began with the D-Day 80th Anniversary Collection and now concludes with a message of victory, remembrance, and peace. Limited to just 1,945 coins, it’s both a historical tribute and a treasured collector’s keepsake.
